In one line
THCA smalls are small, fully formed buds, roughly pea-size to about an inch, cut from the lower and inner branches of the same plants that produce the large top colas. They are the same strain and harvest, sorted by size. They can test somewhat lower than top buds because they got less light, so the COA should come from the smalls lot itself.
In this note

THCA smalls are buds sorted out by size. They are small, whole, trimmed flowers from the lower and inner branches of the same plants whose top colas are sold as large buds. Same strain, same harvest, same drying and curing. Most sellers use the word for buds from about pea-size up to roughly an inch. No legal or lab standard fixes the cutoff, so a seller’s photos and scale shots tell you more than the label.
Smalls, popcorn, larf, shake, trim
These terms get mixed up, and they describe different things.
| Term | What it is | Whole bud? | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smalls | Small, dense or medium-dense buds, trimmed like large buds | Yes | Smoking as is; no breaking down needed |
| Popcorn | Used as a synonym for smalls by many sellers | Yes | Same |
| Larf | Airy, underdeveloped buds from deep in the canopy | Yes, but loose | Usually lower grade; often sold as smalls by less careful sellers |
| Shake | Loose pieces that break off buds in handling | No | Rolling, cooking |
| Trim | Sugar leaves cut off during manicuring | No | Extraction |
The distinction that matters is smalls vs larf. Both are small. Smalls are finished flowers that happen to be small. Larf did not fill out. Photos of broken buds and the seller’s description of density separate the two better than any grade name.
Why are smalls small?
Light. A cannabis plant puts its largest, densest flowers where the most light lands, at the top of the canopy. Lower and inner branches are shaded by the plant above them, so their flowers stay smaller.
Light also affects chemistry, not just size. Danziger and Bernstein (2021) studied medical cannabis plants about 2.5 m tall. They found that low cannabinoid concentrations in inflorescences at the bottom of the plants correlate with low light penetration. Removing bottom branches or defoliating to let more light in raised concentrations locally (Plants, 2021, doi:10.3390/plants10091834).
What that means for a bag of smalls:
- Smalls can test lower than top colas from the same plants. How much lower depends on canopy management, plant height and lighting.
- Indoor grows with good canopy management tend to narrow the gap. Short plants under even light have fewer deep-shade buds.
- The only number that counts is the one from the smalls lot.
What to check on a smalls COA
| Check | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Sample description | “Smalls” or a lot code that matches the smalls bag | One COA covering “all grades” of a harvest |
| THCA | Reported for the smalls lot | Copied from the large-bud listing |
| Delta-9 THC | 0.3% or less dry weight (the federal hemp test until December 11, 2026) | Missing, or reported only as “total cannabinoids” |
| Total terpenes | A full panel | No terpene data |
| Moisture or water activity | Reported | Not run (small buds dry and over-dry fastest) |
| Test date | Close to the harvest you are buying | Older than the harvest |
Total THC math works the same way for any size: delta-9 + (THCA x 0.877).
How smalls behave in the bag
- More surface per gram. A pound of smalls has many more buds than a pound of colas, so more trichome-covered surface is exposed to air. Terpenes leave faster, so store smalls airtight, cool and dark, and open the bag as rarely as you can.
- Stem share. Small buds carry proportionally more stem. Well-trimmed smalls keep it low. Check the seller’s broken-bud photos.
- Weight is weight. A Pound (16 oz) is 453.6 g and a Half Pound (8 oz) is 226.8 g, whatever the bud size. Smalls settle more tightly, so the same weight looks like less in the bag.
- No grinding needed for many uses. Many buyers like smalls for exactly this reason.
Why are smalls cheaper?
Smalls usually sell for less than large buds of the same strain. The reasons are trimming labor per gram, lower bag appeal and sometimes a slightly lower potency. None of that means worse flower. It means the price is set by size and looks, and the COA has to show the chemistry.
Log 2026-10-03: size does not change the law
As of October 3, 2026, smalls follow the same federal and state hemp rules as large buds. Federal hemp is defined at 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis (7 U.S.C. 1639o). State law decides whether THCA flower can be sold as hemp at a given address, and many states already restrict or ban it.
On December 11, 2026, Section 781 of P.L. 119-37 applies to THCA flower. The date was moved there by H.R. 6500, signed September 2, 2026. From that date, hemp is measured by total THC including THCA. A lower-potency smalls lot is still far over the line:
| Smalls THCA | Delta-9 | Total THC | Times the 0.3% limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16.0% | 0.12% | 14.15% | about 47 |
| 18.0% | 0.15% | 15.94% | about 53 |
| 22.0% | 0.20% | 19.49% | about 65 |
In the licensed-dispensary lane, smalls are sold under state cannabis law and are unaffected by the hemp definition. In the hemp-retail lane, high-THCA smalls stop qualifying on December 11 like any other THCA flower.

Asked at the desk
Are THCA smalls the same as shake?
No. Smalls are whole, trimmed buds that are small. Shake is the loose broken material that collects at the bottom of a bag or bin. Trim is leaf cut away during manicuring.
Are smalls weaker than big buds?
Sometimes slightly. A 2021 study of 2.5 m cannabis plants found lower cannabinoid concentrations in inflorescences at the bottom of the plant, linked to less light reaching them. The difference depends on the grow, so compare COAs.
Do smalls have their own COA?
They should. Ask whether the lab sample came from the smalls lot or from a composite or top-bud sample of the whole harvest. Only the first one describes what is in your bag.
Are smalls a way around the December 11, 2026 total-THC rule?
No. Size does not change the legal test. Smalls at 18% THCA still compute to about 15.8% total THC, far above the 0.3% line that applies to THCA from December 11, 2026.
