In one line
GMO, also called Garlic Cookies, is Chemdawg x Girl Scout Cookies, originally bred by Mamiko Seeds. Lab profiles lead with beta-caryophyllene, then limonene and myrcene. Its garlic and chemical nose comes mostly from compounds a terpene panel does not measure. As of October 3, 2026, GMO THCA flower is federal hemp only until December 11, 2026.
In this note

GMO is Chemdawg crossed with Girl Scout Cookies. Leafly credits the original breeding to Mamiko Seeds, and the strain is also sold as Garlic Cookies and GMO Cookies. Published profiles lead with beta-caryophyllene, then limonene and myrcene. Most of what makes GMO recognizable, a garlic, onion and chemical nose, is not in those three terpenes.

What does GMO stand for?
Garlic, mushroom, onion. The letters describe the smell. They do not refer to genetic modification, and the plant is a conventional cross. The name signals what the strain is for: buyers who want savory, funky profiles rather than fruit or dessert.
Why does GMO smell like garlic?
Caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene account for pepper, citrus and an earthy base. None of them smells like garlic. Savory, skunky and allium notes in cannabis are associated with volatile sulfur compounds. These are present at tiny concentrations but have very low odor thresholds, and the terpene panel on a standard COA does not report them.
What follows for buyers:
| You want to know | Look at | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| How aromatic the Batch is | Total terpenes on the COA | Does not measure sulfur volatiles |
| Whether it smells like garlic | Fresh grind, or a seller’s honest notes | No lab line for it on most COAs |
| Whether the funk survived storage | Harvest date and test date | Volatile notes fade first |
The Chemdawg side is where the fuel and chemical character comes from. GSC adds structure and a sweet undertone that some Batches show and others do not.
Reading a GMO COA
- Delta-9 THC at or below 0.3% dry weight. That is the federal hemp test until December 11, 2026.
- THCA. Total THC = delta-9 + (THCA x 0.877). Example: 29.6% THCA with 0.27% delta-9 gives 26.23% total THC.
- Terpenes. A full panel with a total. Caryophyllene near the top fits the published profile.
- Lab. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and a sample ID you can verify.
Log 2026-10-03: the calendar to December 11
As of October 3, 2026, these are the dated federal and state events between now and the change for THCA flower:
| Date | Event | Effect on GMO THCA flower |
|---|---|---|
| November 3, 2026 | General election; some state cannabis measures possible | State-specific; check your state after results |
| November 12, 2026 | Only cannabinoids a cannabis plant cannot naturally produce lose federal hemp status. Converted delta-8 is on the December 11 date | None directly; THCA has the later date |
| December 11, 2026 | Federal hemp is measured by total THC including THCA, at 0.3% dry weight | High-THCA flower stops being hemp nationwide |
| December 11, 2026 | The continuing resolution in H.R. 6500 also expires | Another extension is possible, not promised |
The legal basis: Section 781 of P.L. 119-37, signed November 12, 2025, rewrites the hemp definition in 7 U.S.C. 1639o. H.R. 6500, signed September 2, 2026, kept November 12 only for cannabinoids the plant cannot naturally produce and moved everything else, THCA included, to December 11 (enrolled text, Sec. 2019; Foley Hoag, September 15, 2026).
After December 11, GMO remains legal under state law in licensed dispensaries in adult-use and medical states, sold as marijuana. In the hemp-retail lane it does not continue as high-THCA flower. Any compliant hemp product sold under the name would need total THC at or below 0.3%. That would be a different product, with a COA to prove it.

Asked at the desk
What does GMO stand for in cannabis?
It is usually read as garlic, mushroom, onion, a description of the aroma. It has nothing to do with genetic modification. The strain is also sold as Garlic Cookies and GMO Cookies.
What is GMO a cross of?
Chemdawg x Girl Scout Cookies, originally bred by Mamiko Seeds according to Leafly.
Why does GMO smell like garlic?
Savory, garlic-like notes in cannabis are linked to volatile sulfur compounds, which a standard terpene panel does not measure. The measured lead terpene, caryophyllene, adds pepper rather than garlic.
Will THCA flower still be legal after December 11, 2026?
Not as federal hemp. On that date the total-THC definition applies to THCA, unless Congress changes the date again. As of October 3, 2026, no further delay has passed.
