Field note N°042 · Strain review

Lemon Cherry Gelato

In one line

Lemon Cherry Gelato is an indica-leaning hybrid credited to Backpackboyz. It is usually listed as Sunset Sherbet x Girl Scout Cookies with a third parent the breeder has never named. Lab profiles tend to lead with beta-caryophyllene, then limonene and linalool. THCA flower sold under the name is legal hemp only until December 11, 2026, and only where state law allows.

Young cannabis plants under fluorescent tubes

Lemon Cherry Gelato (LCG) is a hybrid credited to the Bay Area brand Backpackboyz. It is usually described as Sunset Sherbet x Girl Scout Cookies plus a third parent that has never been named publicly. Very little about its origin is documented, which is why this file keeps what is reported apart from what is verified.

What is Lemon Cherry Gelato a cross of?

The short answer is Sunset Sherbet x Girl Scout Cookies plus an unnamed third parent. That pedigree is reported, not confirmed. Leafly lists two competing origin stories. One is Gelato bagseed, where Gelato itself is Sunset Sherbet x Thin Mint GSC. The other is that LCG belongs to the Runtz family (Zkittlez x Gelato). Backpackboyz has not released a pedigree that settles it.

This affects you as a buyer. Many cuts of a hype name circulate as clones, and some seed lines borrow the name. Two bags labelled LCG can come from different plants. No public registry ties a strain name to a genome, so a strain name is a claim about genetics, not proof of them.

What does LCG smell and taste like?

Reviewers describe lime and sour citrus up front, berry and cherry in the middle, and a doughy, gelato-family sweetness at the finish (Leafly). The terpene chemistry fits that description:

Terpene Typical aroma note Role in LCG profiles
beta-Caryophyllene Pepper, spice Usually the largest share
Limonene Citrus peel Sharp citrus top note
Linalool Floral, lavender Soft floral edge

Sweet and cherry notes are not explained by these three alone. Minor terpenes and esters that most COAs never measure play a part. If a Batch smells flat, look at total terpenes on the COA before you blame the genetics. Poor curing and long storage strip terpenes out of the bag.

Is hemp-lane LCG the same as dispensary LCG?

The name can be identical while the legal channel and the testing standard are not.

Hemp-retail lane Licensed-dispensary lane
Legal basis Federal hemp definition (0.3% delta-9 THC, dry weight) plus state hemp law State adult-use or medical cannabis license
Potency label THCA % and delta-9 % from a third-party COA State-mandated total THC on the package
Where sold Online and in hemp retail, where state law allows Licensed stores in states with cannabis programs
After December 11, 2026 High-THCA flower no longer qualifies as hemp Unchanged; governed by state law

After heating, the chemistry in both lanes is the same. THCA decarboxylates into delta-9 THC. What changes on December 11 is the federal label for the flower, not the plant.

How to read an LCG COA

Check the COA before you check the name.

  • Batch match: the lot or Batch code on the COA matches the bag.
  • Delta-9 THC: at or below 0.3% dry weight. This is the current hemp test.
  • Total THC: labs compute it as delta-9 + (THCA x 0.877). The 0.877 factor is the molecular-weight ratio of THC to THCA (about 314 vs 358 g/mol). Weight is lost as CO2 when THCA decarboxylates.
  • Terpenes: a full panel with a total, not a single “terpene rich” line.
  • Lab: ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, a test date, and a sample ID you can verify on the lab’s site.

Example arithmetic for three hypothetical LCG results (not our Batches):

THCA Delta-9 THC Total THC (computed)
22.0% 0.18% 19.47%
26.5% 0.21% 23.45%
31.0% 0.25% 27.44%

As of October 3, 2026, federal law still defines hemp by delta-9 THC alone: 0.3% or less on a dry-weight basis (7 U.S.C. 1639o). THCA flower like LCG can be sold as hemp on that basis, but only where state law allows. Several states already close that lane.

Section 781 of P.L. 119-37, signed November 12, 2025, changes the federal test to total THC, “including tetrahydrocannabinolic acid,” at 0.3% (CRS IF13136). H.R. 6500, signed September 2, 2026, set December 11, 2026 as the date this applies to naturally occurring cannabinoids such as THCA. Under that rule, a flower passes only if THCA is about 0.34% or less with zero delta-9 (0.3 / 0.877). Every row in the table above is more than 60 times over. Congress could move the date again. It has not done so as of this log.

Asked at the desk

What is Lemon Cherry Gelato a cross of?

The most cited pedigree is Sunset Sherbet x Girl Scout Cookies plus one undisclosed parent, credited to Backpackboyz. The breeder has not published a full pedigree, so every version of the lineage you read, including this one, is reported rather than confirmed.

Is Lemon Cherry Gelato indica or sativa?

It is a hybrid that most menus list as indica-leaning. Indica and sativa labels say little about chemistry. The terpene numbers on the Batch COA tell you more.

What terpenes are in Lemon Cherry Gelato?

Published profiles list beta-caryophyllene first, then limonene and linalool. Your Batch can differ, so read its COA terpene panel.

Is Lemon Cherry Gelato THCA flower legal?

As of October 3, 2026, it can be sold as hemp only if it tests at or below 0.3% delta-9 THC and the buyer's state allows it. From December 11, 2026, federal law counts THCA in total THC, and high-THCA flower stops being hemp anywhere in the US.
