Field note N°166 · Strain review

Candy Runtz strain

In one line

Candy Runtz is listed by AllBud and Weedmaps as Zkittlez x Gelato, the same pedigree they give Runtz itself. No database we checked publishes a separate terpene profile for it. The name alone cannot tell you whether a bag holds a distinct selection, a Runtz phenotype or a borrowed label, so the Batch COA has to do that work.

Single young cannabis plant under a grow lamp

Candy Runtz is listed as Zkittlez x Gelato by both AllBud and Weedmaps, which is the exact pedigree those sites give Runtz itself. As of October 3, 2026, none of the databases we checked publishes a separate terpene profile for it, so the name on its own does not tell you what is in the bag.

AllBud’s 38% ceiling is a database number, not a test result. Use the COA for the Batch in front of you.

Why is the Runtz family so confusing?

Because one pedigree now carries at least four names. Runtz, White Runtz, Pink Runtz and Candy Runtz are all listed as Zkittlez x Gelato or as a phenotype of it. The names separate plants or products, not parent lines.

Name Listed pedigree Published lead terpenes Source
Runtz Zkittlez x Gelato Caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene Leafly
White Runtz Gelato x Zkittlez Caryophyllene, limonene, linalool Leafly
Pink Runtz “A phenotype of the original Runtz” Limonene, caryophyllene, linalool Leafly
Candy Runtz Zkittlez x Gelato Not published AllBud, Weedmaps

How one cross ends up with many names:

  • Phenotype selection. A breeder grows out seeds from one cross and keeps the best plants. Each keeper can get its own name. That is the usual explanation for White and Pink.
  • Brand lines. Runtz is also a brand that packages flower. A name on a pack can mark a product line rather than a new cross.
  • Borrowed labels. A grower with a sweet Zkittlez-type cut can call it by the best-known name it resembles. Nothing in federal hemp law checks strain names.

The Weedmaps Candy Runtz entry shows the problem. It calls Candy Runtz “aka Runtz or Runtz OG” and tells the Emerald Cup debut story usually told about Runtz. On that source, Candy Runtz is another name for Runtz, not a separate cut.

What does Candy Runtz smell and taste like?

Reviewers describe it as sweet first. AllBud’s write-up lists “sweet fruity caramel candies accented by sour citrus and juicy, ripe berries.” Weedmaps tags break down as sweet 39%, citrus 35% and tropical 26% of reported flavors. Both fit the Zkittlez side of the cross.

Reported effects on Weedmaps are relaxed (44%), happy (35%) and uplifted (21%). Those are buyer tags, not measurements, and none of this is medical advice.

Grow and phenotype notes

  • No flowering time is published for Candy Runtz in the sources checked. Leafly lists Runtz at about 63 days and Zkittlez at 8 to 10 weeks.
  • AllBud describes diamond-shaped forest green buds with red-orange hairs and a “frosty coating of chunky, amber-tinted white crystal trichomes.”
  • Seed packets sold as Candy Runtz by different seed banks are different plants. A clone of one keeper is the only way to get the same genetics twice.

What to check on a Candy Runtz COA

  1. The Batch code on the COA matches the bag.
  2. Delta-9 THC at or below 0.3% dry weight. As of October 3, 2026, that is the federal hemp test, and it stays in place until December 11, 2026.
  3. Total THC, reported or computed: delta-9 + (THCA x 0.877). Example: 27.0% THCA with 0.21% delta-9 gives 23.89%.
  4. Terpene order. Caryophyllene and limonene near the top fits every published Runtz-family profile. Myrcene in third place sits closer to the Runtz listing. Linalool in third sits closer to White and Pink. This narrows the field. It does not prove the name.
  5. The cut’s source. Ask the seller which breeder or nursery the plant came from, and whether it was grown from seed or clone. “Unknown” is an honest answer and worth knowing.
  6. The lab. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and a sample ID you can verify.

Log 2026-10-03: a name is not a lab result

Here is which lines on a Candy Runtz bag a lab actually tests, and which one the law looks at:

Line on the bag Who stands behind it Lab-tested? Legal weight as of October 3, 2026
Strain name The seller No None
THCA % The lab Yes Becomes decisive on December 11, 2026
Delta-9 THC % The lab Yes The federal hemp test today (7 U.S.C. 1639o)
Total THC % The lab, or the formula Yes The federal test from December 11, 2026

Section 781 of P.L. 119-37 redefines hemp by total THC “including tetrahydrocannabinolic acid.” H.R. 6500, signed September 2, 2026, set that change for THCA to start on December 11, 2026. Some states closed the hemp lane to flower earlier, including California under AB 8 (January 1, 2026) and Ohio under SB 56 (March 20, 2026). In adult-use states, licensed dispensaries sell Runtz-family flower as marijuana under state law, and none of this changes that.

Asked at the desk

What is Candy Runtz a cross of?

AllBud and Weedmaps both list Zkittlez x Gelato, which is the same pedigree given for Runtz. No breeder has published a separate Candy Runtz pedigree that the sources we checked agree on.

Is Candy Runtz the same as Runtz?

Weedmaps treats them as one strain and lists Candy Runtz as "aka Runtz or Runtz OG." Some sellers use the name for a separate sweet selection, so what a given bag holds depends on where the cut came from. Compare the terpene order on its COA with the published Runtz profile, and ask the seller for the source of the cut.

What does Candy Runtz taste like?

Reviewers on Weedmaps tag it sweet, citrus and tropical. AllBud's description adds caramel candy, sour citrus and ripe berry.

Can a COA prove a strain name?

No. A COA measures cannabinoids and terpenes in a sample. The strain name is the seller's claim. The lab result can make a name more or less plausible, but it cannot confirm it.
